Portrait of the artist Robert Seuffert (1874-1946) and his family in his studio, Cologne. 1927. Vintage gelatin silver print on doubleweight paper. 17 x 22,7 cm. Photographer's blindstamp in lower right, mounted to original board (slightly soiled/time-stained) with Sander's Cöln-Lindenthal, Dürenerstr. 201 studio label in lower left of mount.

Signed, dedicated and dated (1929) by Robert Seuffert below the image on the mount as well as annotated "Sakramentsaltar in Herz Jesu zu Köln. Geweiht am 9. Januar 1927". – Minimal oxidation mirroring in edges, otherwise in very good condition.

With his project "Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts" (People of the 20th Century), August Sander set out to portray the general character and traits of the German people at the beginning of the 20th century. This and some of following lots were part of this project. The image offered here is part of group IV, "Die Stände: Der Geistliche" (The Social Classes: The Clergy). – Corners bumped, some surface scratches, a few handling creases, slight irregularity to ferrotype surface in left portion, otherwise in good condition.

Portrait of a young officer. 1902-04. Vintage matte gelatin silver print. 16,7 x 8,3 cm. Mounted to original card (some soiling, tape stains on verso), with Aug.Sander Kunst-Anstalt Linz Landstr. 59-61 printed below image on mount; studio logo and text printed on mount verso.

The photograph offered here is a rare example of the beginning of August Sander's artistic and professional career. After travelling as a photographic apprentice to Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle, Leipzig and Dresden, in 1901 Sander worked in the Greif photographic studio in Linz. Together with Franz Stukenberg he took over the Greif photographic studio in 1902, renaming it Sander & Stukenberg. – Some light surface scuff marks, otherwise in very good condition.
